April · Four years ago

The letter came to a kitchen table that had seen more bills than good news. Maya read it four times before she let herself believe the first word.

August · Move-in day

That fall she walked through gates no one in her family had ever had a reason to walk through. She arrived an hour early. She wanted to be awake for it.

October · Sophomore year

What the brochures never show: closing the diner at midnight, running the same numbers at 2 a.m., getting the same answer. She could not afford spring semester.

One Thursday in November

Then an email with her name in it. A scholarship had found her. She did not read this one four times. She called her mother.

That scholarship was your gift.
That Thursday was you.

The years after

The hours the diner used to take, the lab took instead. By spring she was not keeping up anymore. She was being asked to go further.

May · This year

Four years after the kitchen table, she crossed a stage. First in her family. Graduate school in the fall.
